How to Solve Connections Categories
Connections gives you sixteen words and asks for four groups of four. You get four mistakes before the game ends. Most players lose not because the groups are impossible, but because they guess too early. A little method fixes that.
Find the obvious group first
Every puzzle has one group that jumps out, usually the yellow category: things like types of fish or colors. Solve it first. Locking in four words clears clutter off the board, and the remaining twelve are much easier to sort. If nothing jumps out, look for the four words that feel the most ordinary. The tricky wordplay groups almost never look ordinary.
Save wordplay for last
The purple category is usually built on wordplay: homophones, words that follow the same prefix, or fill-in-the-blank phrases. It is designed to be found last. If you are staring at four words that only connect through a pun, set them aside and solve everything else first. By elimination, the wordplay group often reveals itself.
Watch for red herrings
Connections deliberately includes words that fit two groups. That is the whole trap. If a word seems to belong in two different sets of four, do not guess either one yet. Solve the groups you are sure about first, and the decoy word will land where it truly belongs.
Shuffle and say it out loud
The shuffle button is underused. Rearranging the board breaks the false patterns your eyes locked onto. And when you think you see a group, say the connection out loud in a full sentence: these are all types of what? If you cannot finish the sentence cleanly, the group is not real yet.
Guess with a plan
Four mistakes sounds generous until the board gets murky. A good order: yellow first, then whichever of green or blue feels solid, then wordplay last. Never guess a group you cannot explain. One careful pass beats four hopeful taps.
